For parents, guardians and teens

This page exists by legal duty (art. 16 of Brazilian Law 15,211/2025) and by conviction: anyone looking after a teenager has the right to know what this app does, which risks we ourselves see in it, and what we built against each one — before installing anything.

It's written to be read by adults and teens alike. If anything is unclear, write to us — the address is at the bottom.

What Cabana is — and what it isn't

Cabana is a self-care app: you choose a creature — a capybara, a sloth or a fennec fox — and take care of yourself by taking care of it. Small goals, an optional mood journal, a home that changes with the day.

What it is not: it's not a social network. No chat, no talking to strangers, no feed, no likes, no rankings, no comparing one person to another. Nobody sees what your kid writes — not even us (the summary section below explains how that works technically).

It's also not therapy and doesn't replace professional care — and the app says so plainly where it matters.

The risks we identified ourselves

Every app that keeps someone company through their day carries risks. These are the ones we take seriously here, stated without hedging:

Emotional content. The app lives alongside hard days — that's what it's for. The risk would be nagging, blaming, or giving the wrong nudge at a fragile moment.

Intimacy of what gets written. A journal and a mood log are sensitive data. The risk would be anyone — including us — being able to read them.

Money. There is an optional subscription. The risk would be a teenager spending without anyone knowing.

Screen time. Any app can become one more place that holds you. The risk would be this one being designed for that.

What we built against each one

Against nagging: the creature never punishes, never guilts, never demands presence. There are no day streaks to keep and no penalty for being away — that is an engineering rule with automated tests, not a promise. Every line the creature says was written and reviewed by people, one by one, with provenance on record; no text is generated by AI on the fly.

Against exposure: what you write stays on the device, encrypted with a key that never leaves it. With an account and sync turned on, what goes up is already-scrambled text — unreadable to us and to anyone. There are no ads, no data sales, no analysis of anyone's mood.

Against hidden spending: every purchase goes through the phone's store (Google Play), which carries its own parental controls — including requiring approval for each purchase. There are no random-outcome purchases (loot boxes), under any circumstances.

Against time traps: the app is designed to send you away. The adventure rewards time AWAY from the screen; notifications come in three kinds, each a single tap to turn off: one in the morning, one when the creature returns, and the goal-time reminders the person sets themselves (never more than six a day); and whoever is doing well hears LESS from the app, not more. If you disappear, the app asks less, never insists.

And if a hard day shows up in what someone writes, the app offers — right then, without judgment and without storing the text — a path to real help lines. That offer blocks nothing and creates no record about the person.

Purchases, from the inside

Cabana's core is free, forever: creating your creature, goals, the daily check-in, the support resource. The subscription unlocks extras — additional creatures, items, journeys.

Payment happens in the phone's store, never inside our app — which means the store's parental controls fully apply: purchase approval, password, limits.

Price and period are spelled out before any confirmation, and canceling is a store flow, with no maze of ours in the way.

Minimum age and accounts

Cabana is for ages 14 and up.

An account is optional and does one thing: sync between devices. Without one, the whole app works and nothing leaves the phone. The sign-up flow asks for age and country — and below the age of consent in your country, the account simply won't be created (the app keeps working fully without it).

There are no in-app supervision tools today. Purchases go through the store (Google Play), which has its own family controls; time of use is what the system itself shows. If and when tools of our own exist, this page changes before they arrive.

Public summary of the impact report

Brazilian law requires a written risk assessment with a plain-language public summary (Decree 12,880/2026, art. 47). Ours, honestly:

The app works fully without an account: what you write stays on your device, encrypted, and is sent nowhere. We can't read it — and don't want to. If you create an account to sync, what goes up was already scrambled on your device; on the server, the journal and the mood log are an unreadable block. What the server knows: the account email, that the app was used, and when. What it doesn't know: what you feel or write.

We assessed ten risks — from breaches to compulsive use — and none stayed high after the measures. The three that stayed medium have engineering locks: the dangerous state cannot exist in production. The full report is available to the authority on request.

An account with no sign of life for 700 days gets an email warning; a month later, it is truly deleted. Deleting sooner is a button inside the app — or on this site, with no reinstall.
